Why work with a dietitian?
Dietitians apply the science of nutrition to promote health, treat and prevent malnutrition and provide dietary guidelines for patients, clients and public in health and illness.
By law, only practitioners who have met the desired qualifications and who continue to maintain their knowledge and skills through continuing professional development can call themselves "Registered Dietitian" and "Dietitian".  Dietitians are held accountable for their conduct and the care they provide both through the regulation process and through membership of the Irish Nutrition & Dietetic Institute.

I currently offer the following dietetic/nutrition consultation services:
  • Private clinical nutrition and dietetic consultations
  • Healthy eating and active living workshops
  • Presentations on behalf of groups, organisations, and workplaces
  • Developing nutrition/healthy eating and hydration policy
  • Nutrition education and training for health care professionals
  • Nutrition analysis for the food service industry

Healthy eating and active living workshops
If you would like a supermarket tour to learn how to create healthy shopping lists, avoid marketing temptations, recognise healthyfood labels and products and ensure healthy eating, then contact me!  Individual and group rates available.

I have developed a series of workshops to explore how the food you eat and the activity you take can impact on health, development and disease risk.  Each workshop covers a particular life stage or public health issue (infant feeding, obesity, type 2 diabetes, etc.) that affects so many of the Irish population. To find out when the next workshop is on or to register your interest in future workshops, click here.

Presentations on behalf of groups, organisations, and workplaces
You might want to provide your group with nutrition information about a particular topic of interest.  Some popular topics I have been asked to present include:
  • Healthy eating during childhood
  • Healthy eating for older people
  • Nutrition and active living for teenagers
  • Nutrition for the amateur sportsperson
  • The heart health diet
  • Nutrition and Type 2 Diabetes
  • Nutrition and Multiple Sclerosis
  • Childhood obesity
  • Nutrition through the life stages
  • Healthy eating for schoolchildren
I will work with you to develop a tailored presentation or workshop specific to the needs of your group and based on current best practice dietetic guidelines. Contact me here.

Developing nutrition and hydration policy
You may work in a setting in which you care for or have influence over the food choices of people with specific needs.  For example, a nursing home caring for the elderly, a school or preschool influencing children's eating habits, or a workplace investing in employees health and thus productivity. A nutrition policy is a means of ensuring that everyone has a common understanding of improving food choices to ensure good nutrition is maintained.

A nutrition policy can be tailored to meet the needs of all stakeholders (staff, clients and service users).  It can incorporate:
  • specific training programmes and guidelines to ensure the nutrition knowledge of health care staff who influence food choice on behalf of their clients
  • a review of nutrition -related clinical procedures and guidelines
  • evaluation and review of catering menus to ensure nutrition quality
  • the promotion and modelling of healthy eating through specific activities (e.g. classroom lessons).

I will work with you to develop a policy specific to the needs of your workplace and stakeholders. Contact me here.

Nutrition education and training for healthcare professionals
It is not unusual for many health care professionals or assistants to find themselves providing nutrition advice to patients or clients as part of a care plan.  I can work with you to ensure that you are offering evidence based nutrition guidelines and current best practice for a range of nutrition related diseases and conditions.

I also have experience in preparing and delivering lectures on nutrition and dietetics at both undergraduate (UCD) and postgraduate (NUIG) levels.

As a qualified, registered dietitian and health care professional, I can recognise and support your needs to provide for continuous professional development in this respect. Contact me here.

Nutrient analysis for the food service industry
Providing customers with calorie and nutrient information together with healthier menu options can help to promote your business.  However, it takes additional time, resources and knowledge to produce calorie and nutrient information on menu items.  Food businesses need to be aware that displaying the number of calories on food and drink is a form of labelling which is regulated by food law in Ireland. The most important rule of labelling is that the consumer must not be misled. Therefore, calorie information provided  on food and drinks must be accurate (FSAI).

Support from an independent, qualified, registered dietitian can be a cost-effective approach that provides businesses with confidence in the accuracy and quality of the information they are providing to customers.  I can provide the following services to catering outlets, including cafés, restaurants and takeaways:
  • analysis of current recipes and products, using nutritional analysis software
  • choice of calories only or a fuller nutritional profile indicating ‘traffic light’  information where relevant
  • the highlighting of dishes from your menu that are suitable or even the healthier choice for people with heart disease, diabetes, obesity, etc.
  • detailed documentation on data sources and assumptions
  • suggestions on how recipes could be amended to improve their nutrition profile
  • flagging of healthier options on menus
  • where appropriate, training your staff to undertake these analyses and providing ongoing support and advice
  • organise tours of food outlets (supermarkets) to inform customers on a healthy shopping basket.
To discuss these options more, contact me.
